Maryann Collura Memorial Stone, Fair Lawn

Leah Felner

The memorial stone depicts an engraving of Mary Ann Collura’s Badge and Police Patch as well as a quote that she lived her life by, “Set your goals high, work hard and believe in yourself and you can be whatever you want.”

Although this terrible murder happened on the lawn of the largest church in Fair Lawn, I was surprised that they placed the stone there. Although it makes sense I would have thought that the town would have put the Memorial stone in another place more important to her family than to her place of death.

I learned that any place can be special to a family and that it is not anyone’s place to judge how a person mourns. It also made me think about other fallen officers and how they are mourned in other communities. Every couple of years, a new “something” is donated or made in her honor and it would be interesting to find out what is done in other places.
