John Basilone

Mike Amorese

The John Basilone Memorial statue is located on the corner of Somerset Street and Canal Street in Raritan, New Jersey. The statue commemorates Basilone’s heroic accomplishments during the Battle of Guadalcanal in World War II. The monument depicts Gunnery Sergeant Basilone as he appeared in the midst of battle. He is shown shirtless and holding a Browning heavy machine gun, a staple of his gunnery squad.

Upon viewing the monument, I have to say I was amazed and proud to have such a prominent American hero showcased in my town. It is hard to believe that out of all the men and women who served in the armed forces during the war, one of the most celebrated grew up mere minutes from where I live. Having a person like this representing your town gives a whole new appreciation for the term “hometown hero.”
